The Andromeda-Milky Way collision is a predicted galaxy collision, due to take place in approximately three billion years time, between the two largest galaxies in the Local Group* - the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy. It is often used by John Dubinski, an astronomer based in Toronto, and others as an example of the kind of phenomena associated with such collisions. As with all such collisions, it is unlikely that objects such as stars contained within each galaxy will actually collide, as galaxies are in fact somewhat diffuse. If the theory is correct, the stars and gas contained in Andromeda will be visible to a naked-eye viewer (if one exists on Earth at the time) in approximately three billion years.

Such collisions are relatively common; Andromeda, for example, is believed to have collided with at least one other galaxy in the past.
But don't worry about a collision during your lifetime. Right now, the Milky Way and Andromeda are so far apart that even light takes two million years to journey between them. But on the scale of galaxies, they are quite close together.
Colliding galaxies are common in galaxy evolution. Colliding may lead to merging. Merging is the most violent of all galaxy interactions. This occurs when two galaxies collide and do not have enough momentum to continue traveling after the collision. Instead, they fall back into each other and eventually merge together, forming one galaxy. If one of the colliding galaxies is much larger than the other, it will remain largely intact after the merger; that is, the larger galaxy will look much the same while the smaller galaxy will be stripped apart and become part of the larger galaxy. Collisions are less violent than mergers in that both galaxies remain separate after the collisions.
